John,
COVID-19 has created an economic and health crisis that is affecting us all. But it is impacting some of us more than others because of systemic inequality and structural racism. That’s why I want to invite those able to join to a growing community of people across the country pledging funds through the #ShareMyCheck campaign to support the communities most impacted by this crisis.
Our economy and government is not set up to support the health and well-being of all people. This reality is being starkly reflected in the disproportionate impacts of COVID-19. In a 2019 Federal Reserve survey <[link removed]>, four in ten workers said they would have difficulty covering a $400 emergency expense. Sixteen million people have now lost their jobs in the last 3 weeks (as of April 9th). The crisis is exacerbating existing inequalities, and people of color, immigrants, and low wage workers are among those hardest impacted.
Many of those who have been laid off are being forced to make wrenching decisions about whether to put food on the table, buy medications, or pay the rent to keep a roof over their heads. People who are homeless are struggling to find a safe place to shelter in place. Undocumented workers will not be receiving stimulus checks. For residents of cities like Boston or Los Angeles, the $1,200 stimulus check won’t go very far toward paying rent, much less putting food on the table or covering utilities.
However, if you have more than you need right now, I encourage you to join over 900 people (and counting) who have generously pledged to redistribute their checks to help those who are being hit hardest by this injustice. We at United for a Fair Economy are asking our community members and members of our Responsible Wealth project to take the bold step of redistributing your stimulus check if you are able and pledging to the #ShareMyCheck campaign led by Resource Generation <[link removed]>.
Stimulus checks will be distributed to individuals who make up to $99,000 in income (up to $198,000 for couples), based on your 2018 or 2019 tax returns. You would pledge to give some or all of your check to an organization or effort of your choosing that is supporting those most impacted and left out of this policy – the undocumented community, people experiencing homelessness, and people in prison, for example. For those of you who are supporting your community through volunteering, organizing, delivering food, helping family and friends, and more, we are so grateful for all you are doing to provide mutual aid. Giving money is just one of many ways to provide community care in this moment.
Pledge to #ShareMyCheck! <[link removed]>
Go here to register your pledge and learn more. We will not share your information outside of UFE, but we will report the aggregate impact.
UFE is committed to supporting movements working for policy change and economic transformation. We believe this work is needed now more than ever. Please consider giving part of your check to United for a Fair Economy <[link removed]> today to support long term movement building work to create a just and fair economy.
In Solidarity,
Jeannette Huezo, Executive Director
