President Trump has mishandled this pandemic at every turn. Instead of taking responsibility and charting a clear course forward, he is attempting to shift blame to the World Health Organization (WHO), saying he's going to halt U.S. funding to an essential partner in this fight.
It's wrong.
Withholding funds for the WHO during the most horrific global health crisis of our time is akin to cutting off ammunition to an ally as an enemy draws closer.
The White House knows how poorly they've handled this crisis from day one. They dismissed, and they misled. Repeatedly.
The American public knows it, too: According to the New York Times, "Recent polls show that more Americans disapprove of Mr. Trump's handling of the virus than approve."
Though the WHO could have done more to slow this global health emergency, they are not the enemy and need our strong support more than ever before. Now is the time for us to come together as every country across the globe fights this common enemy.
It's time to take responsibility and keep our eye on the prize. Petty fights and retribution won't save lives. Strong public health agencies will.
