Team, a new report this week sheds light on Mitch McConnell’s 2017 efforts to defund a critical program designed to detect and curb the spread of infectious diseases.

When Congress was dead set on repealing the Affordable Care Act, Mitch tried to include an amendment to destroy a critical program at the Centers for Disease Control that helps state and local health departments navigate epidemics—including right here in Kentucky.

Mitch tried to wipe out around $1 billion to stop pandemics like the one we’re currently facing, even as leading epidemiologists warned him that it would be a “disastrous” and “unconscionable” move.

The efforts to repeal health care reform failed, but Mitch and his allies didn’t give up. They’ve repeatedly tried to eliminate crucial funding, with partial success.

When it comes to our public health, we need leaders who can imagine the scale of the challenges we will face and help us prepare for them accordingly. That’s why real leaders put people, not partisanship, first.

Again and again, we’ve seen it play out: When given a choice between serving the people he was elected to represent and serving his political and special-interest allies, Mitch chooses the latter. He knows who he went to Washington to help—and it’s not us.
