Sigh.

Donald Trump has announced that he will discontinue U.S. funding to the World Health Organization.

Here are direct quotes — ostensibly about the World Health Organization — from the official White House transcript of Trump’s announcement Tuesday night:

• “severely mismanaging and covering up the spread of the coronavirus”

• “failed to adequately ... share information in a timely and transparent fashion”

• “failed in this basic duty and must be held accountable”

• “failed to investigate credible reports”

• “delays ... in declaring a public health emergency [cost] valuable time”

• “has not addressed a single one of these concerns nor provided a serious explanation that acknowledges its own mistakes, of which there were many”

• “tremendous death and economic devastation because those tasked with protecting us by being truthful and transparent failed to do so”

• “so much death has been caused by their mistakes”

Read those again.

Notice something?

EVERY ONE of those accusations precisely describes how Trump and his administration have catastrophically bungled their handling of the worst public health crisis our country has faced for at least a century.

This is just the latest example of Trump’s compulsive projecting — accusing someone else of something HE is actually guilty of doing.

The World Health Organization plays a lifesaving role, especially in developing countries. Cutting its funding now puts the lives of everyone on Earth — including Americans — at greater risk.

Even if we manage to get the coronavirus under some control in the U.S., sitting by while the pandemic ravages other nations will make it impossible to prevent new spikes here and impossible to truly reopen our economy.

This is a time that demands global solidarity.
