Dear MoveOn member,
One of the main so-called "Mandates for Leadership" in Project 2025—the
far-right playbook for a second Donald Trump term—is that "freedom is
defined by God, not man."^1
And for those of us who believe that our country would never be rewritten
as a theocracy—after all, separation of church and state is a cornerstone
of our Constitution!—this week has been a terrifying wake-up call.
Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, a man tasked with defending the
Constitution, was caught on tape agreeing that he must fight to "return
our country to a place of godliness."^2
And just two days after the Southern Baptist Convention, which represents
13 million members, voted to pass a resolution declaring embryos from in
vitro fertilization (IVF) to be human life, MAGA Senate Republicans voted
down the Right to IVF Act.^3
John, we don't have to wait for Trump to take office for MAGA
politicians to begin making our government one of Christian
nationalism—it's already happening.
Our ONLY recourse to save the nation from a Christian nationalism takeover
is defeating Trump and his MAGA cronies soundly at the ballot box. MoveOn
has the plan in place to do just that—Robert Reich has said it, The New
York Times has said it, years of experience and data on what wins
elections show it! But as a grassroots organization, we can see this plan
through to November only if our members step up, and we typically
experience a fundraising slump in the summer. We simply cannot afford that
shortfall this year.
Will you make a $5 monthly gift to MoveOn so we have the
consistent resources to engage millions of people with the truth about
Trump and Project 2025's Christian nationalist agenda all the way through
Election Day?
[ [link removed] ]Yes, I'll chip in monthly.
[ [link removed] ]No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.
Project 2025 has already spent more than $20 million on preparing for
Trump's transition to power, including recruiting thousands of hard-right
lackeys who have been vetted and are ready to do Trump's every bidding in
government offices from Day 1.^4
The "Mandate for Leadership" isn't the only mention of religion in Project
2025. The 887-page document is infused with policy to make evangelical
Christianity the de facto state religion, including:
* Directing the Department of Health and Human Services to rewrite all
policy to adhere to a "biblically-based definition of marriage and
family," including recognizing only heterosexual marriage and
rejecting any transgender care or protections.^5
* Making churches—not all religious institutions, but specifically
Christian churches—exempt from any health requirements, including
during a pandemic, and requiring higher pay from ALL employers on
Sundays to discourage working on the Sabbath.^6
* Deleting the terms sexual orientation and gender identity; diversity,
equity, and inclusion; and gender, gender equality, and gender equity
from all government policy and any legislation.^7
* Banning all abortion and defunding access to birth control.^8
And lest we think these plans are impossible in the giant bureaucracy that
is the American government, Project 2025 also includes replacing thousands
of career civil servants with Trump sycophants ready to roll back civil
rights and undo environmental protections.^9
Freedom of religion is paramount to the freedom of our nation, and
Christian nationalism would trample the rights of millions of Americans.
We must pull out all of the stops right now to inform voters of what's at
stake with a Trump administration.
Will you donate $5 a month to MoveOn's election program and
help defeat Donald Trump and his MAGA movement?
[ [link removed] ]Yes, I'll chip in monthly.
[ [link removed] ]No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.
As dire as all of this seems, the good news is that the vast majority of
Americans are against these policies.
Eighty-six percent of Americans support making IVF fully and freely
available without government interference.^10 Eighty percent support
abortion rights.^11 Seventy-six percent support LGBTQ+ protections.^12 And
83% oppose Christian nationalism.^13
In fact, once informed about Project 2025, the majority of voters oppose
any candidate attached to the plan.^14 Voters are on our side—but they
don't know that these issues are really on the table. Project 2025 has
been flying under the radar until recently. The more they learn, the more
Trump's poll numbers shrink.^15
Your support will help our efforts to:
* Connect with voters through MoveOn member testimonials to personalize
election issues. In 2018, our Real Voter Voices project moved tens of
thousands of voters to help achieve a blue wave. We are building on
that success by creating a new program to collect thousands of
testimonial videos from MoveOn members speaking authentically about
the stakes of the 2024 election, why they are voting, and candidates
they are supporting.
* Use the power of social media influencers. Whether it be on TikTok,
Discord, or Instagram, micro-influencers—social media personalities
with as many as 100,000 followers—are driving major trends. If we have
the resources, we'll build a cadre of 200 micro-influencers ready to
share messaging we know will work, each speaking about our issues at
least five times during the fall and also collaborating with MoveOn on
content. These influencers will also encourage viewers to get involved
with our get-out-the-vote activities.
* Put boots on the ground. Face-to-face conversations work, which is why
we are investing in our on-the-ground canvassing program. We plan to
print 250,000 pieces of literature—making a powerful case as to why
defeating MAGA Republicans is incredibly important—to put in our
trained canvassers' hands and into the hands of critical voters.
* Organize election parties to draw people to our work. We are
sponsoring election parties across the nation to gather MoveOn members
to write postcards, call voters, and spread the word about the ways
that a Democratic Congress and second Biden term will improve our
lives—and how a MAGA regime will destroy our democracy and how,
together, we can build a democracy that works for everyone.
We are less than 150 days from the election, and the polls between Trump
and President Biden are tied—meaning that we have a lot of work to do.^16
We can't wait until September to raise this money, John, or it
will be too late. We need to know that we can count on your ongoing
support starting NOW. Are you with us?
Will you donate $5 a month to help make sure we can spread
the word about the threat of Christian nationalism and stop MAGA in
November?
[ [link removed] ]Yes, I'll chip in monthly.
[ [link removed] ]No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.
Thanks for all you do.

Want to support MoveOn's work? The MAGA movement's book bans have forced
teachers and librarians across the country to remove books from their
shelves and censor what young people can learn. MoveOn is fighting back,
including by filling a "Banned Bookmobile" with books that the far right
has banned and driving it to key cities and towns to raise the visibility
of book bans, hand out banned books for free, and bring people together to
stop censorship. To keep up the fight against book bans and the MAGA
politicians who support them, we need your help.
Will you start a monthly gift to power and sustain MoveOn's critical
work?
