I am forever grateful for the lessons my father taught me, and I’m inspired by him to this day. In fact, I wear my father’s Air Force ring every day — a reminder of his fighting spirit.
My dad was a patriot who defended our values and freedoms during World War II and the Korean War. His bravery gave me the courage to overcome 19 major surgeries as a little girl and teenager to correct my bilateral cleft lip.
When I was 17, he was kidnapped by the FARC. His bravery and heroism sustained me and as I fled Colombia to the United States.
But by far, the most important lesson my dad taught me is that when the cause is just, you get in there and fight for what is right.
This lesson has shaped my approach to public service, inspiring me to fight with integrity and passion for the needs and rights of our community.
Let’s all take a moment today to express our gratitude for the fathers in our lives, remembering the sacrifices they made and the dreams they nurtured in us.
Happy Father’s Day!
