A PERSONAL NOTE

Finally...

I'm able to get around a little bit better on crutches. I even took a few wobbly steps without them!

Sorry that this has turned out to be a weekly diary about surgical recovery. This has really taken over my life recently, what with trips to physical therapy, icing and elevating, and hours of work at home to improve my strength and flexibility in that foot.

Sometimes things like this can be all-encompassing but sometimes it's worth it. In the case of getting my mobility back, I'd say totally worth it.

Things are moving along well, and there's some little note of progress almost every single day now. First, I was able to put weight on both feet and walk with two crutches. Laborious but so nice to get up. Then I was able to get in and out of the shower alone. Glorious! Then, I could walk with one crutch, which meant I could accomplish a few things because my other hand was free to carry a drink, a book, my phone, or whatever I wanted to put away. Next, I was able to walk with crutches up the uneven path outside my door and get a little bit of fresh air. It's been SO LONG and to smell that sweet summer air was delightful. Yesterday, I took a few steps without any crutches at all. I overdid it a little, and I paid for it in pain (which scared me - did I mess things up?), but after ice and a good night's sleep, I'm okay this morning.

The biggest thing for me as a prepper is that I no longer feel quite as vulnerable. I won't be running away from an emergency anytime soon, but at least now, if the house caught on fire, I could actually get out by myself. While there's still a long way to go, I'm celebrating the little wins.

I've been hard at work producing content for The OP and working on Grace's story. (I'm really really close to having it done!) This was the perfect time to sit down and get this book finished, and I hope you love where it goes. In my final draft, I'm adding more details, more flashbacks, and a bonus epilogue. So when you get the book, it will be the same story but filled out a little bit more. I'm using your feedback to fix some of the errors you all noticed, and I've got a great editor waiting in the wings to check on continuity. I can't wait to publish this - I've wanted to write a novel my entire life.

I have gotten so many wonderful cards from you guys, warm emails, and even some delightful gifts. I can't put into words how much this has meant to me during a difficult time. Thank you.
