Did you know the ground holds more carbon than the Earth’s atmosphere and all its plants combined?

Hi John,

Did you know the ground holds more carbon than the Earth’s atmosphere and all its plants combined?

In this Vital Signs article (just a three-minute read), you’ll learn about farmers’ efforts to improve soil health and how EDF is testing soil samples to see how effective the ground is at storing carbon. Check out the article: [link removed]

EDF agricultural soil expert, Jocelyn Lavallee, says it best:

“Soil is a massive store of carbon, and it could go one way or the other. It could be a huge source, or it could be a huge sink. It affects so much of the Earth’s future.”

While soil can capture and store carbon dioxide from the air, less is known about what happens when disturbances, like plowing, break up the soil’s structure. Jocelyn and her team of soil experts are digging into how farmers’ efforts to improve soil health affect carbon storage.
