Friends -
Right now, the federal government is implementing the stimulus package – the CARES Act – that we passed a few weeks ago. It’s not going as smoothly as I’d have hoped with Donald Trump’s ego and corporate friends creating problems.
But relief checks are starting to make their way into the hands of working families, and I am fighting to ensure that the small business assistance programs are equally available to those who need it.
Even still, I know it is not enough. We have to do more. That’s why figuring out what we need to do next is on the top of my mind.
The coronavirus has upended all of our lives, and it’s clear that a complete return to normalcy is still a ways off.
That’s the reality that Congress needs to start grappling with. We have to be honest about how different things are going to be until we have testing and tracing at a massive scale, and ultimately, a vaccine.
There’s no doubt that more economic relief is going to be needed. We have to continue pushing for PPE and hazard pay for frontline workers. We’re also going to have to figure out how to make democracy work while social distancing — that means figuring out ways to scale up voting by mail.
This is an unprecedented health and economic emergency, and I am fighting alongside my Democratic colleagues as hard as we can for you and your family.
Stay safe,
Ed Markey
