VIDEO OF THE DAY: Conservative Supreme Court justices strike down ban on "bump stock" devices that turn guns into fully automatic killing machines
Banned after the horrific 2017 mass shooting in Las Vegas where a lone gunman armed with a modified AR-15 killed 60 people and left more than 400 injured, bump stocks are now legal once again, thanks to a criminally negligent ruling by the six radical right-wing justices on the Supreme Court. Bump stocks make a regular gun fire almost as fast as a machine gun, but apparently "almost as fast" didn't quite cut it for the right-wing ideologues on the nation's highest court. Writing for the majority, Justice Clarence Thomas said that a semiautomatic firearm equipped with a bump stock did not meet the definition of a machine gun, so the court had no choice but to overturn the life-saving ban. President Biden condemned the ruling and called on Congress once again to take action on gun safety, reiterating his demand to pass a federal assault weapons ban. Democrats must hold the White House and take control of both chambers of Congress, otherwise any sensible action on gun safety reform will simply die again and again at the feet of indifferent Republicans. We must remember in November.

The US Navy prepared for decades to potentially fight the Soviet Union, then later Russia and China, on the world’s waterways. But instead of a global power, the Navy finds itself locked in combat with a shadowy, Iran-backed rebel group based in Yemen. The US-led campaign against the Houthi rebels, overshadowed by the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip, has turned into the most intense running sea battle the Navy has faced since World War II, its leaders and experts told The Associated Press. The combat pits the Navy’s mission to keep international waterways open against a group whose former arsenal of assault rifles and pickup trucks has grown into a seemingly inexhaustible supply of drones, missiles, and other weaponry. Near-daily attacks by the Houthis since November have seen more than 50 vessels clearly targeted, while shipping volume has dropped in the vital Red Sea corridor that leads to the Suez Canal and into the Mediterranean. The Houthis say the attacks are aimed at stopping the war in Gaza and supporting the Palestinians, though it comes as they try to strengthen their position in Yemen. All signs suggest the warfare will intensify — putting US sailors, their allies, and commercial vessels at more risk.

A biography about alt-right fanboy and testicle-tanning enthusiast Tucker Carlson has been canceled by a major publishing house, apparently because Carlson's star power has waned since his unceremonious ouster from Fox News last year. Politico's Michael Shaffer attributed the book deal’s demise to Carlson’s diminished cultural relevance, writing that "the cancellation stems at least in part from the belief that Carlson, once the biggest name on cable, no longer has the kind of cultural footprint to warrant a pricey, complicated book by a top-shelf writer." For the record, we would argue Carlson never had the kind of cultural footprint to warrant a complicated book of any kind; he simply had hold of one of Rupert Murdoch's very loud and very well-funded megaphones.
