Immigrants may be underrepresented in office, but we're undeterred in our mission to build a democracy that works for all of us!

We’re thrilled to launch our 2024 Elected Advisory Council (EAC), a cohort of trailblazing New Americans who will advise and amplify the growth, programming, outreach, and development of the NAL network. Composed of a diverse group of state and local elected officials, the EAC will convene regularly and further our movement to create a more inclusive democracy!

“What’s more, the arrival of record numbers of immigrants at the United States-Mexico border over the past two years has not corresponded with an overall increase in crime.”

Despite the extreme rhetoric being shared, The Brennan Center found that the data does not support claims that the United States is experiencing a surge in crime caused by immigrants. Policymakers need to refrain from spouting false and generalized claims as it not only furthers extreme, discriminatory agendas, but also hinders  crime prevention policies that can actually help make communities safer for everyone.

Happy Pride Month! While 7.6% of adults identify as LGBTQ+, less than 1% of elected officials in the U.S. identify the same, though there's no way to quantify those who hold office but haven't come out publicly.

Our friends at Run For Something and the LGBTQ+ Victory fund are committed to demystifying what it looks like to run for office as an out and proud LGBTQ+ leader. Register for their upcoming Ask Me Anything: Running for Office While LGBTQIA+ — and get to meet one of our very own NALpistas, Arizona House Representative Lorena Austin!

In just 10 years, the Asian American population in North Carolina grew by 68%. But even then, Asians have the lowest rates of voter registration. We’re here to change that by working with North Carolina Asian Americans Together as they engage Asian Americans to vote and get civically engaged.

Together, we'll host our Ready to Lead® AAPI training for the very first time in North Carolina! If you’ve always wanted to run for office, but didn’t know where to start, consider applying to our program! Know someone who’d be a perfect fit? Let us know!

#NALpistasDidThat

Here are some of the amazing things our alumni have done recently:

  • Massachusetts State Representative Tram Nguyen (Ready to Lead® Trainer) filed a coercive control bill that was unanimously passed in the House. H.4744 is an act that bans the release of deepfake and non-consensual explicit content to protect people from abuse or coercion.
  • Michelle Amor (2024 Ready to Lead® AAPI Women) was recognized for her leadership and advocacy for the Filipino American community in New York by New York Assemblymember Steven Raga (Ready to Lead® and Ready to Win® 2016) on behalf of New York State.

Primary Day in Nevada was this week! Congratulations to our Nevada NALpistas for running to represent our communities and change the face of leadership! 🎉

  • Rochelle Nguyen (Ready to Lead® Nevada 2020), the first AAPI elected in the Nevada State Senate, won her primary re-election for District 3
  • Cecelia González (Ready to Lead® Nevada 2020 & Ready to Win® 2020) won her re-election for Nevada Assembly District 16
  • Cinthia Moore (Ready to Win® 2024) won her primary for Nevada Assembly District 11
  • Aaron Bautista (Ready to Lead® AAPI 2023 & Ready to Win® 2023) will be on the ballot this November for the Board of Regents District 4

Know someone who should be included in this list? Let us know! We're so proud of our NAL family for taking action to create a stronger, more inclusive democracy and would love to give everyone a shoutout!

Help fight systemic white supremacy by supporting our mission to get more women, immigrants, and underrepresented Americans on the ballot and into power.
