Dear John,
Recordings released this week have exposed a new round of stunning partisan bias and religious extremism from Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito.
The recordings, obtained at a recent Supreme Court Historical Society dinner, reveal Alito's shocking belief that our nation's ideological divides can't be resolved -- expressing views that directly undermine the impartiality and integrity of our nation's highest court.
Justice Alito declared that "one side or the other is going to win” and that fundamental differences "really can't be compromised”. And he openly agreed with a call, by the undercover reporter who recorded him, for America to "return to a place of godliness,” obliterating the line between church and state.
In stark contrast, Chief Justice John Roberts used the same event to reaffirm the importance of judicial impartiality and the court's duty to decide cases based on the law, not personal beliefs or religious agendas.
Roberts flatly rejected the idea of the Supreme Court acting as an arm of a "Christian nation.”
To be clear, I am no fan of secret recordings designed to entrap public officials into saying things they’d rather not have the public hear, but Alito’s remarks confirm everything we assumed about Alito’s approach to the law.
Alito's recorded statements, along with his wife's inflammatory comments, recorded at the same event, about flying religiously provocative flags to spite their neighbors, paint a picture of a justice who has lost sight of his duty to uphold the Constitution and the rule of law for all, regardless of their beliefs.
We’ve partnered with more than a dozen organizations to build pressure on Congress to immediately begin impeachment proceedings of Justice Alito. Sign and send a direct message to your U.S. representative and senators now.
America needs Supreme Court justices who are committed to fairness, equality, and the unwavering pursuit of justice for all, not partisan extremists seeking to impose their personal ideologies on the nation.
From flying an upside-down American flag at one home to the "Appeal to Heaven” flag at another -- both prominent symbols directly aligned with the violent Jan. 6th attack on the Capitol -- Justice Alito's blatant bias and disregard for impartiality erode public trust in the Supreme Court and threaten the very foundations of our democracy.
All of this would be grounds to consider impeachment even if Justice Alito had recused himself from cases related to Trump, the 2020 election, and the insurrection, but Justice Alito won’t even do that.
And if Justice Alito won’t recuse, then Congress must do it for him -- permanently.
The Supreme Court is a vital part of our democracy, and its decisions have a profound impact on the lives of all Americans. It is essential that the Court is as fair and impartial an institution as possible, and that its decisions be based on the law and the Constitution, not on political or religious ideology.
It’s time for Congress to take decisive action. Join us in calling for Justice Alito's impeachment and help build the support needed to restore integrity to the highest court in the land now.
Thank you for taking action today.
