Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

For thousands of young people, summer break is just a few days away. As we head into summer, I want to thank all our dedicated teachers, principals, and school staff for their hard work and commitment throughout the school year. Thank you for loving and challenging our young people and helping them dream big.

Now, it’s that time of year when we come together — across government, with dozens of community partners, and with families — to keep young people engaged in safe and fun activities. This summer, approximately 12,000 young people will earn and learn through the Mayor Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program. Thousands of kids and teens will participate in DPR sports, arts, and science camps. In fact, spots are still available in Boost Camps, which are specifically designed for young people ages 11-13; learn more and register your child at dprboostcamps.splashthat.com [ [link removed] ].

We also need your help spreading the word that free meals are available to young people in DC all summer. From June 26 to August 25, youth 18 and younger can access free meals at more than 100 sites across all eight wards. There is no application or ID required to receive meals — just show up!

To find more information about summer meal sites, places to go, and things to do, visit summer.dc.gov [ [link removed] ].

Ready for Summer

Finally, stay safe and cool in the coming days. We activated the first heat emergency of the season [ [link removed] ] today, and the extreme heat is forecast to continue throughout next week. To help people beat the heat, spray parks [ [link removed] ] will be open throughout the day next week.

Please stay cool, check on seniors and neighbors, and if you see someone who needs transportation to a cooling center, dial 311 or call the shelter hotline at (202) 399-7093.

Sincerely,

Muriel Bowser
