Yesterday, the Supreme Court delivered a crucial victory for reproductive rights by affirming access to mifepristone – a medication commonly used for non-surgical abortion care.
For decades, mifepristone has been a safe and effective option for ending pregnancies, including those that threaten women’s health and lives. This decision is a significant win in our ongoing battle to protect women’s access to basic healthcare.
The potential restriction or ban of mifepristone at the hands of the minority of anti-choice extremists would have been catastrophic, further eroding reproductive freedoms and endangering lives. But while we celebrate this victory, we know that we’re still not out of the woods yet.
Within the court’s ruling were some concerning implications that hinted at potential avenues for future challenges to mifepristone and other tactics to restrict abortion access. Anti-abortion groups are still challenging access to mifepristone in three conservative states. Planned Parenthood has warned that Clarence Thomas laid out a “road map for anti-abortion activists” to succeed in those cases.
No one should be forced to carry an unwanted or dangerous pregnancy to term – but that won’t stop extremists from pushing to restrict or ban abortion access – even in situations where the mother's life is at risk. Safe and legal access to abortion isn’t just a matter of personal choice – it's a critical part of comprehensive healthcare that saves lives.
As threats to reproductive justice persist, there will be far-reaching – and even fatal – implications for millions of American women. I want to emphasize how grateful I am to pro-choice advocates who helped deliver SCOTUS’s unanimous decision to keep mifepristone available. But we also must be clear that the fight for reproductive rights continues.
In Congress, I will be a champion for reproductive rights — and I need your help to get there. We’re just days away from our competitive June 25 primary, and every donation helps us reach more voters. Chip in any amount, to flip NY-01 and elect the most pro-choice candidate in this race >>
Thanks,
Nancy
