Friend,

Though we are still in what seems to be the early days of the coronavirus, day by day it’s become clear that we will need to thoroughly review how our government prepared for and handled this pandemic, and what we need to do to protect ourselves in the future.

I’ve introduced a bill with Senators Kamala Harris and Dianne Feinstein to set up a 9/11-style commission to do just that.

It’s clear that our nation’s response was too slow. It’s clear that there were warning signs from the CDC, WHO and other agencies. And it’s clear we didn’t have the supplies, protective gear and equipment necessary to adequately respond to this crisis. And it’s clear that we needed to begin testing far earlier.

Right now, doctors, nurses and healthcare providers are begging for more supplies. Governors and mayors are pleading with their citizens to stay at home, and for more help from the federal government. And it’s still far too hard for Americans who need tests to get them.

It’s becoming increasingly apparent that after our country has overcome this, we must take the time to carefully evaluate the character of our efforts to prepare for and combat this virus.

After Pearl Harbor, September 11, and many other tragic events in American history, independent, bipartisan commissions were established to provide a complete accounting of what happened, what we did right and wrong, and what we can do to better protect the country in the future.

As cases, hospitalizations, and deaths from coronavirus continue to rise, I am officially calling for the creation of a 9/11-stye, bipartisan commission to examine the U.S. government’s response to this pandemic. And I introduced legislation to do so.

Through this bill, a ten-person bipartisan commission would be created when this pandemic is over, and then hold hearings and public events to collect information, provide a full account to Congress, the U.S. Senate, the President, and the American people, and make recommendations to improve our country’s preparedness for future outbreaks.

If you agree we need to review and analyze how our country handled this pandemic so we can be better prepared for the future, add your name in support of this commission now. [[link removed]]

Thank you, and I hope you stay safe and healthy.
