We have some important news! Congress has advanced critical legislation that will greatly benefit the autism community.

1. The Autism CARES Act of 2024 has passed the U.S. House Energy & Commerce Committee, moving it closer to a full House vote before parts of the existing law expire. Over the past year, Autism Speaks has been laser-focused on advancing this bill. We’ve held hundreds of meetings with Members of Congress and ensured the voices of autistic people and their loved ones were heard through our Hill Day and Grassroots Advocacy Network.

2. The Autism CARES Act of 2024 now includes a key Autism Speaks priority: the National Institutes of Health would be required to produce an annual, comprehensive budget plan for autism research, which would speed up progress to improve the lives of autistic people and their families.

3. The ENABLE Act was introduced by U.S. Senator Eric Schmitt, who is also a parent to a son with autism. This bipartisan bill, which has been endorsed by Autism Speaks, extends key elements of existing policy on ABLE Accounts, tax-free savings accounts that allow people with disabilities and their families to save and invest while preserving their eligibility for federal programs like Medicaid and Supplemental Security Income.
