Draconian Rules

What to Know: Americans nationwide are beginning to protest stay-at-home orders they see as arbitrary and overly broad and harmful to the U.S. economy.

The TPPF Take: Government overreach shouldn’t get a free pass because of the coronavirus.

“Eventually—as with other plagues of the past—COVID-19 will likely finish its course as a broad public threat,” says TPPF’s Grace Watson. “But while the sudden outbreak of a virus may ultimately be followed by its wane, the rapid onset of government policies does not fade away quite so naturally.”

See You in Court

What to Know: California will sue the Trump administration for its new vehicle emissions rules.

The TPPF Take: The new emissions rules will save lives.

“Given the new safety features and better overall design of new cars, the emissions rule is projected to save 3,300 lives over the next 10 years and keep 46,000 people out of the hospital following a crash—all  because they were able to afford a newer car that was previously out of reach,” says TPPF’s Jason Isaac.

Maybe the First, Not the Last

What to Know: Baylor University is announcing budget cuts as the economic and cultural effects of the coronavirus start to become clear.

The TPPF Take: Higher education is changing forever—and we must be ready for innovation.

“Accreditation in higher education is a barrier to innovation because it insists on a recipe of inputs and processes which may or may not actually be tied to producing results for students,” says TPPF’s Andrew Gillen. “Escape hatches for colleges and programs that meet high thresholds for learning and labor market outcomes can allow some innovative colleges to circumvent the accreditation system.”
