Do you know about “deepfakes”?
- Deepfakes are sounds, images, or videos generated using so-called artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
- AI is already powerful enough to make deepfakes that are essentially indistinguishable from the real thing.
- In fact, deepfakes are already being used — nefariously yet effectively — in real-world elections both here in America and elsewhere in the world.
- But the Federal Election Commission (FEC) — the government agency that is *supposed* to safeguard the integrity of our elections — has so far failed to take action to prevent deepfakes from sabotaging our democracy.
- Meanwhile, we can’t stop time. The 2024 election — which may well be the most consequential election in our nation’s history — is less than five months away.
- That’s why Public Citizen has formally petitioned the FEC to issue clear rules — before it’s too late — that will minimize the chances of deepfakes undermining the 2024 election.
The FEC has a meeting on June 27 — just 13 days from now — where it may decide whether or not to move forward with our rule-making petition.
We have to turn up the pressure on the FEC to address political deepfakes. Take action today even if you’ve taken action before on this critical issue.
To the Federal Election Commission:
Why is the FEC still dragging its feet on political deepfakes? The clock is ticking. You must act without further delay — before it’s too late for the 2024 election — to address the threat that political deepfakes pose to the very core of our democracy.

Thanks for taking action.
For democracy,
- Robert Weissman, President of Public Citizen
