Honoring Our Flag 🇺🇲

Stars, stripes, and an enduring symbol of unrivaled freedom.

In recognition of Flag Day, I think it’s important to reflect on the grand old
flag and everything she stands for. Nothing is by accident when it comes to this
iconic American symbol <[link removed]>
. The stripes represent the 13 original colonies, and there’s a star for all 50
states of the Union. Even the colors have meaning: red for hardiness and valor,
white for purity and innocence, and blue to represent vigilance, perseverance,
and justice.

It feels like there has never been a more crucial time to recommit ourselves
to these collective values. There’s a lot of wacky stuff happening in our
country lately, and some folks are trampling all over our precious flag—both
figuratively and literally. We’ve watchedanti-Israel protesters
<[link removed]>
take it down to fly a Palestinian flag, cheering when Old Glory hit the
ground. Earlier this month, aColorado woman
<[link removed]>
ripped seven flags to shreds outside a police department—flags that were
placed in honor of fallen officers. All this begs the question: Have these
people lost their dadgum minds?

Perhaps it's rare these days, but I’ve always held our flag in the highest
regard. Back when I was Knox County Mayor, I even established collection points
for to-be-retired American flags that were no longer usable to ensure they were
properly and respectfully disposed of
<[link removed]>
.

Our brave men and women of the armed forces go to battle under the flag, and
those taken from us too soon come home in caskets draped in it. I’m reminded of
this every day as I look up at the unfurled and framed flag that hangs in my
office—the same one that covered my Uncle Roy’s casket back in the D-Day era.
Even after so many years, it never fails to move me, reminding me that such
powerful memories are shared by many of us.

Whether the Star-Spangled Banner is flying high at a parade, a funeral, or on
your home's front porch, she's always a sight to see—a perfect symbol of
American pride and a beacon of freedom and opportunity for the rest of the
world.

An East Tennessee Treasure 🧡

One of the best spots to cool off this summer can be found right here in East
Tennessee!

Norris Lake was just ranked fourth on USA Today’s list of the 10 best lakes
for swimming
<[link removed]>
, even beating out two of the actual Great Lakes. For all of us East Tennessee
locals, we already knew this reservoir is a gem—but I’m glad the rest of
America is taking note.

If you haven’t been out to Norris Lake, I’d suggest you put it at the top of
your summer to-do list. It’s just 20 miles north of Knoxville and features a
whopping800 miles of shoreline
<[link removed]> spanning five counties.
Managed by the Tennessee Valley Authority, the lake began as a method offlood
control <[link removed]> in the 1930s. Today, the calm
waters make it a perfect spot for everything from water skiing to fishing.

Take a day off and experience the serene beauty and family-friendly activities
Norris Lake offers. You won't be disappointed!
