I'll get right to the point, friend: 

A bump stock is a device that enables semi-automatic firearms to be converted into machine guns.

Today, the Supreme Court struck down the ATF’s rule to prohibit the production, sale, and possession of bump stocks, putting them back into civilian hands and putting all of us at risk.

There is no legitimate reason that a civilian needs access to a machine gun. Period. This decision eviscerates Congressional regulation of machine guns which have been heavily regulated since the 1930’s.

We have witnessed the extremely deadly risks of bump stocks, friend. In 2017, a gunman used assault rifles equipped with bump stocks to kill 60 people and injure over 400 others in a matter of minutes. It remains the deadliest shooting in American history. Putting bump stocks back in civilian hands means that any gathering – whether a music festival, a parade, or a block party – could become a warzone in seconds.

In the wake of the worst mass shooting in our country’s modern history, the sale and use of bumpstocks was prohibited at the direction of the Trump administration with broad bipartisan support because it was clear that these devices were only good for death and destruction. 

Now, with its decision in Garland v. Cargill, the Court has put bump stocks back into civilian hands and failed the American people. 

Today’s move is yet another dangerous decision by the Court, and plays right into the gun lobby’s hands while putting our lives at risk. This hypertechnical decision ignores the human cost of bump stocks and the reality of why they were designed and how they are used: Bump stocks are a means for individuals and manufacturers to circumvent federal regulations. The gun industry designed them specifically for that purpose. Right now, the NRA is celebrating the decision, calling it “pivotal to NRA’s future challenges of ATF regulations.”

We cannot waste any time in taking action in the face of this deadly decision, friend: Congress shouldn’t have to fix the mistakes of the Supreme Court but right now they CAN take action to save lives by banning bump stocks.
