*Valley Park Eagle Scout Pollinator Planting Project*

On Saturday June 8, more than 300 square-feet of additional pollinator habitat was added to Valley Park. Mendota Heights resident Hannah Trudeau completed her Eagle Scout Service project by planting a pollinator garden in Valley Park, along the trail just south of the bridge crossing behind one of the park’s benches. Scouts from troop #7264 and volunteers planted more than 140 native flowers, grasses, and sedges. The project will help create important pollinator habitat in Valley Park and Mendota Heights.

Raingarden
Victoria Curve Raingarden Planting

Last week, community volunteers including the Dakota County Master Gardeners and local homeowners planted more than 800 plants and shrubs in five different raingardens along Victoria Curve, including City Hall and the Beth Jacob Congregation.

Raingardens are gardens that are designed to capture and treat rainwater runoff from lawns, roofs, streets and other impervious surfaces. Stormwater runoff from these areas often carries pollutants such as oil, grease and heavy metals, as well as grass clippings, leaves and lawn care chemicals. These pollutants would otherwise end up in our surface waters, and in this case the Mississippi River. The raingarden project was part of the Victoria Curve Street Improvements project that began in 2023. Thank you to everyone who made the project possible!

Pagoda
Tree of the Month: Pogoda Dogwood

The Pagoda dogwood is a native deciduous tree species in the Cornaceae family. It is a small, compact understory tree (15-25 feet) that prefers partial sun-shade, but can also do well in full sun up to 6 hours of direct day light.

It has a unique branching pattern that form horizontal tiers, with simples, alternate, toothless oval leaves. Clusters of white flowers bloom in spring, attracting butterflies and other pollinators, and its berries attract many bird species.

The Pagoda Dogwood’s native rang includes most of the eastern United States, and makes up less than .1% of the tree canopy in Mendota Heights.

NTU
Night to Unite 2024

Each year on the first Tuesday night in August, the City of Mendota Heights hosts Night to Unite, a summer evening dedicated to celebrating and strengthening the commitment to a safe community.

For residents, this is an opportunity to put together a neighborhood celebration, turn on the front porch lights, gather with neighbors and friends, get to know one another, catch up on things, play some games with the kids, enjoy a few hot-off-the-grill favorites and build a sense of community.

*Night to Unite 2024 is Tuesday, Aug. 6.*

Neighborhood representatives are asked to register their Night to Unite events by July 22, so members of the Police, Fire and Ambulance service can stop by to visit.

Register your neighborhood event today!
