Hi John, Senator Tammy Baldwin here.
This month marks 55 years since the New York City Police Department raided Stonewall Inn, a bar in the city's Greenwich Village and a safe haven for the LGBTQ+ community.
Several brave Americans, led by Black and Brown trans activists, fought back against police violence and harassment. Demonstrations throughout the city happened over the span of six days, kick-starting the modern LGBTQ+ movement for equal rights.
Stonewall is a story of those who came before us and put everything on the line, demanding to be treated with dignity and respect. Those who bravely stood up and spoke out so that others wouldn't have to live in fear or silence.
And we must never forget that this progress was made possible by the Black and Brown trans activists who have always been on the frontlines of the fight for LGBTQ+ rights.
I'm inspired by how far we've come in the past 55 years, but as Republicans continue their assault on LGBTQ+ rights — targeting and dehumanizing trans kids, banning LGBTQ+ discussion in our schools, and even threatening to overturn Supreme Court decisions that granted our right to marriage equality — it's clear there is so much more work to be done.
It's going to take all of us to counter these right wing attacks and ensure LGBTQ+ Americans across the country are given the support and equal opportunities they deserve.

As we celebrate the courage that took place 55 years ago, let's take the next step forward in the march for justice and freedom for every LGBTQ+ American.
We have real power because those who came before us refused to back down and be silenced. Now, it's our time to keep advocating for what's right.
Onward.
— Tammy
