John–
The Supreme Court just overturned the federal ban on bump stocks—deadly devices that effectively convert assault weapons into machine guns—in Garland v. Cargill. This decision puts countless lives in danger.
Bump stocks were designed to skirt the law and mimic automatic fire. There is no reason anyone should be able to easily convert a weapon to fire 800 rounds per minute.
We saw just how deadly bump stocks are in 2017, when these devices were used to kill 60 people and wound at least 411 more in our country's deadliest mass shooting in Las Vegas.
The Supreme Court's decision to overturn the life-saving federal ban on bump stocks is a stain on the memory of those killed, wounded, or impacted by the events of that night in 2017—and will only put more lives in the line of fire.
Machine guns don't belong in our communities—and extremist judges who prioritize the gun lobby over public safety don't belong in our courts. So come November, we'll be voting up and down the ballot to prevent more extremist judicial appointments.
With this decision, most protections against bump stocks have completely disappeared, with as many as 35 states immediately impacted. Any states that do not have their own laws on the books restricting bump stocks will immediately find that bump stocks are legal—and people can easily turn assault weapons into machine guns.
We never should have gotten to this point: With a Supreme Court that protects the gun industry more than our lives. And another Trump presidency would mean more extreme judicial appointments that deliver dangerous decisions like this one. Commit to vote against gun extremists in November's critical elections.
No matter what happens, we'll continue to fight tooth and nail to keep these deadly weapons out of our communities.
Thanks for being a part of this movement,
Everytown for Gun Safety
