THIS DAY IN HISTORY
The US Flag and The Army

Today is Flag Day<[link removed]>, a day which commemorates the Continental Congress' resolution<[link removed]> on June 14, 1777 that established the design of the first national flag. Since then, generations of Americans have celebrated the flag<[link removed]> as a symbol of our God-given freedoms and God-blessed nation.
The first Flag Day celebration occurred in Wisconsin in 1885, when a schoolteacher and his students observed<[link removed]> June 14th as "Flag Birthday," or "Flag Day." This idea inspired others around the nation to copy the practice and the celebrations grew in scope and number. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a presidential proclamation<[link removed]> calling for the national celebration of Flag Day, establishing it as a national event.

Today is also the birthday<[link removed]> for the United States Army! The Army was created by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1775<[link removed]>.

George Washington, elected as Commander-in-Chief on June 15, 1775<[link removed]>, issued several orders for the military throughout the War for Independence. One order stated<[link removed]>:

The blessings and protection of Heaven are at all times necessary...The General hopes and trusts that every officer and man will endeavor [to] live and act as becomes a Christian Soldier defending the dearest rights and liberties of his country.
The Army has given much for its country since then. Frederick Douglass reminded the nation<[link removed]>:

We must never forget that the loyal soldiers who rest beneath this sod flung themselves between the nation and the nation's destroyers....If the Star-Spangled Banner floats only over free American citizens in every quarter of the land...we are indebted to the unselfish devotion of the noble army who rest in these honored graves all around us.

Today, let's celebrate the American Army and all our military who so ably defend our flag and our God-given freedoms!
