John,
Yesterday, I had the honor of testifying before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee about the continuing crisis of youth e-cigarette use and why the FDA and other agencies must act now to eliminate the flavored e-cigarettes addicting our kids.
The FDA has authorized the sale of only 23 e-cigarette products – all of them tobacco-flavored – and stated that “these are the only e-cigarette products that currently may be lawfully sold in the U.S.” Yet, manufacturers continue to flood the market with thousands of candy-flavored products.
Every one of these kid-friendly e-cigarettes is on the market illegally, and we’re pushing the FDA, the Department of Justice and other agencies to use all available tools to stop them.
I was so grateful for the opportunity to testify – and to be joined by Josie Shapiro, a high school student and Tobacco-Free Kids youth ambassador who has struggled with addiction to flavored e-cigarettes. Together, we delivered a loud and clear message that the status quo is unacceptable.
