Earlier this year, Congressional Republicans and the gun lobby quietly forced through a rider on the appropriations bill that significantly rolled back a longstanding provision of our background checks system — putting thousands of veterans, their families, and our communities at risk.

The new rider blocks the Department of Veterans Affairs from reporting individuals in crisis or at risk of suicide to the background check system. For 30 years, our background check system helped prevent this and saved veterans’ lives.

Republicans’ decision to give in to the gun lobby’s pressure to help pad their bottom line is reckless and jeopardizes thousands of veterans’ lives.

We cannot return to an era where Republicans and the gun lobby use appropriations bills to sneak through dangerous, unpopular policies that don’t go through the normal process in the Senate.
