As our report lays out, our nation is facing a health care affordability crisis, largely now driven by high and rising hospital prices and the harmful business practices of large heath care corporations.
But these prices are not only hurting patients, they are now a major hidden driver of stagnating wages for workers and higher operating costs for small business owners, leading to unsustainable increases in employer-sponsored health insurance premiums at the cost of wage growth that particularly hurts middle- and low-income workers.
If policymakers do not take action to rein in high and rising hospital prices and the harmful business practices of large heath care corporations, low- and middle-income workers, a group that disproportionately includes people of color, could lose nearly $20,000 in wages over the next decade.
