Dear Friend,

Happy Pride Month!

Pride Month is a celebration of the LGBTQIA+ community and the people within it, past and present, who have fought to make our country and lives safer and stronger. [1] It is also about the importance of being able to live authentically, and moving the dial toward a world where everyone is safe, thriving, and not discriminated against in any way. And on that front, there is a lot of work left to do. That is why today, moms, dads, gender expansive parents, caregivers, and loved ones are using our collective voice to bring awareness to the discriminatory pay inequity that continues to harm the LGBTQIA+ community.

While data on LGBTQIA+ workers is limited, research from Human Rights Campaign shows that LGBTQIA+ workers earn about 90 cents for every dollar the “typical worker” (aka the median wage for all workers in the United States) earns. [2] But we all know that the LGBTQIA+ community is not a monolith – the wage gap for LGBTQIA+ workers widens when race, sexuality, and gender identity are considered, with Latine LGBTQIA+ and trans women workers among the lowest earners. These discriminatory practices must END!

On this LGBTQIA+ Equal Pay Awareness Day, we join forces with organizations and individuals across the country to challenge a system that devalues our labor, discriminates against our identities, and denies us the economic security we deserve. Together, we strive for a future where our contributions, regardless of gender identity, sex characteristics, or sexual orientation, are valued equally. [3]

We're calling on Congress to prioritize policies that will strengthen and protect the lives and rights of the LGBTQIA+ community now, and in the future. According to recent findings, one in four U.S. adolescents in grades 9 through 12 reported their sexual identity as non-heterosexual. [4] These young people will soon enter the workforce, if they have not already. We need to band together and continue the fight against pay discrimination, to ensure safer and more equitable work environments for them.
