“I knew I was gay before I knew I was autistic.” Research shows that autistic people are more likely to identify as LGBTQ+ than the general population. Celebrating inclusion and embracing diverse families

Growing up as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, Autism Speaks’ Lindsay Naeder was careful to curate the spaces she was around, always testing if she could be her true self. Here, she reflects on the importance of fostering inclusion and radical acceptance of autistic members of the LGBTQ+ community during Pride Month and throughout the year.

New regulation strengthens civil rights protections for people with disabilities

Decades of advocacy have made America more inclusive and accessible, but far too many barriers still exist for people with disabilities to exercise their civil rights. The Office of Civil Rights within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recently issued new federal rules that strengthen civil rights and anti-discrimination protections for people with disabilities. Autism Speaks is grateful to see many of the changes we supported included in these monumental rulings in favor of the autistic community.
