60 Years of Progress and Pitfalls in the War on Poverty
|
In partnership with the office of Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NJ), CLASP hosted a briefing earlier this month for Congressional staffers to commemorate the 60th anniversary of President Lyndon Johnson’s declaration of a War on Poverty and Great Society legislation. Panelists discussed the achievements and shortcomings of Great Society programs and the work that remains to be done to end poverty for good.

Our 2023 Impact Report highlights the many ways CLASP has worked to limit poverty’s harm in America through advocacy, research, collaborative partnerships, and community engagement with people with lived experience.

CLASP President and Executive Director Indivar Dutta-Gupta to Step Down
|
Dutta-Gupta, who joined CLASP in 2022, raised the visibility of critical antipoverty solutions and enhanced CLASP’s profile as a key player in the fight for racial and economic justice.

|
As part of a Congressional hearing on newcomer immigrant students in public schools, CLASP submitted a statement for the record that makes the case for additional resources and training for schools to equitably serve those students. The statement also addresses the importance of protecting the constitutional right for all U.S. children to a public education regardless of immigration status.

June 11: CLASP, the Ohio Immigrant Alliance, and family members of people who were deported hosted a public forum about the need for wider paths to return from deportation. Copies of the book Broken Hope: Deportation and the Road Home and the issue brief were delivered to members of Congress.

June 10: Wendy Cervantes spoke at the National Migrant and Seasonal Head Start Association Policy Summit.

|

June 6: Isha Weerasinghe began a series of policy and advocacy trainings for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration grantees participating in the National Network to Eliminate Disparities in Mental Health.
