John, New Mexico's primary elections proved that the pro-choice movement is stronger than ever, especially at the state and local level.
That's why we're running a Frontline Defenders Fund to support our candidates at the state and local levels of the fight for reproductive freedom. Will you donate today to be a part of it?
10 EMILYs List-endorsed candidates will now advance to the general election for the state legislature, and New Mexico voters soundly rejected three different anti-choice candidates, along with one accused of serial sexual predation. Here's what we were up against, and how a few of these incredible women can make history in November:
- Indigenous activist Angel Charley defeated former state Sen. Clemente Sanchez in New Mexico's 30th state Senate District, and will become the first woman to ever represent this district if she wins in November.
- Navajo attorney Michelle Paulene Abeyeta defeated state Rep. Harry Garcia in New Mexico's 69th state House District, and would become the first woman and the first Indigenous person to represent this majority Native American district.
- STEM advocate Anita Gonzales defeated state Rep. Ambrose Castellano in New Mexico's 70th state House District, and would be the first woman and woman of color to represent this district since 1970.
- In New Mexico's 15th state Senate District, policy analyst and finance consultant Heather Berghmans defeated Rep. Daniel Ivey-Soto, a 10-year veteran of the New Mexico state Legislature accused by multiple women of sexual harassment and other abuse.
Our opponents in these primaries all sided with radical, anti-choice extremist Republicans to try to strip New Mexicans of reproductive freedom, and New Mexicans made it clear at the primary polls last week: Voters across the state want strong, pro-choice leadership fighting for their rights.
We're over one hurdle and now facing the race to Election Day in November. Donate to our Frontline Defenders Fund now to support Democratic pro-choice women like Angel, Michelle, Anita, and Heather in their fight to safeguard reproductive freedom in states across the country:
