Dear Friend,
Earlier this week, we got the first look at who's funding the shady "Independent Expenditure Committee" [[link removed]] backing the effort to recall Charles Allen. This SuperPAC ran a blitz of bad faith ads about Charles’ record on The Washington Post , Vox , and other major websites, while providing an illegal, in-kind contribution to the recall committee [[link removed]] .
With no contribution limits, this group raised $36,000 from less than 40 people - much more than they could have as a normal campaign. Its donors include the global head of government affairs for News Corp (yes, the Fox News parent company owned by Rupert Murdoch), corporate lobbyists associated with powerful interests and/or conservative movements, multiple current Trump donors, and a senior attorney with Judicial Watch -- a far-right group backing Trump and his Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade [[link removed]] ).

Recall Fundraiser at the Home of Judicial Watch Senior Attorney
In fact, tonight, the donor from Judicial Watch - Michael Bekesha - is hosting a fundraiser for the recall in Ward 7. You might remember Michael ran against Charles in 2018 as a Republican and lost in a landslide.
I really can't overstate how awful Judicial Watch is. It’s a fringe, right-wing group actively working to undermine our elections, roll back reproductive rights at the federal and state level, attack the LGBTQ community and people of color, and even subvert our legal system ( here’s their statement calling Trump’s 34 felony convictions “pure corruption [[link removed]] .”) [[link removed]]
I don't point out the recall campaign’s right-wing ties because I think they don’t deserve a say in local government. It’s because these are people who actively oppose our values - values Charles has always embraced - like the right to women's healthcare, sensible gun laws, and the science of climate change. I wouldn’t want people like that supporting any campaign I’m involved in.
I’m so proud of everyone who is working to fight this recall. More than 1,000 people -- the vast majority from Ward 6 – have donated close to $150,000 to run this campaign and why Planned Parenthood, Sierra Club DC, and our local firefighters back Charles. That tells me Ward 6 voters know Charles is a great leader who provides outstanding service on the Council.
If you haven’t yet, please donate today. We’re in the final weeks leading before the deadline for the recall campaign to submit signatures, and we need your help to keep spreading the #DeclineToSign message.
