Hi John,
As the general election approaches, now is the time to let your local MP candidates know that, if they are elected, you want them to push for big, bold ideas and meaningful action to tackle the climate emergency at its roots.
Will you email your local candidates now and call on them to back a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty, a much-needed global plan to phase out coal, oil and gas in a fast, fair and managed way?

After decades of UN climate talks, and widespread agreement to cut climate change emissions, many governments are jeopardising this by continuing to approve new coal, oil, and gas projects. And fossil fuel corporations spend hundreds of millions of pounds on lobbying to block, obstruct or delay climate action.
It’s clear that what is needed is a concrete, binding, global plan to tackle the heart of the problem: fossil fuels. A plan that would see countries work together on a fast, fair and properly funded transition away from fossil fuels for good. That’s what a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty would provide.
We need to let candidates know what we want and expect of them as our representatives in parliament if they are elected. And it’s really important that we get the issue of the climate crisis, and the need for a global plan to manage the end of the fossil fuel era, onto their agenda.
Can you use our simple tool to write to your MP candidates now?

The call for a treaty has been spearheaded by some of the world’s most climate-vulnerable countries, including Pacific Island nations like Fiji and Vanuatu which have seen the impacts of climate change at first hand for decades. Now they also have the support of others, including Colombia – like the UK, an oil producing country – which sees that there is now a stark choice between fossil fuels and life. We need the next UK government to do the same and to back the Fossil Fuel Treaty.
Getting a group of MPs in the new parliament who are willing to champion the Fossil Fuel Treaty is absolutely vital in building pressure on the next government to throw its weight behind the treaty. Please do write to your candidates and call on them to back the Fossil Fuel Treaty.
