This month marks both the 11th observance of Immigrant Heritage Month and the 14th anniversary of DACA. We remember these not simply as anniversaries, but as monuments to the creativity and tenacity of our shared movement. Immigrant Heritage Month was championed for years by FWD.us, and DACA was the result of advocacy by several partners including the youth-led United We Dream, which had formally organized just a few years before. 

This June is a difficult one, with immigrant families facing real threats and longtime allies in government turning away from the cause. But as we look forward, we remember the decades of struggle that came before, we celebrate and recognize the strength of those who persevered through adversity, and we resolve to keep fighting for a future where every month is Immigrant Heritage Month.

A longtime friend of PIF, Alberto Gonzalez, reached out recently to ask that we share some materials with you. Alberto served as the PIF representative for UnidosUS, before joining the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Since joining the Biden Administration, he’s worked to make USDA nutrition materials more responsive to immigrant families. USDA is now a leader among federal agencies in incorporating research-tested messages offering assurances that using food security programs will not affect immigration status.

USDA recently rebranded the agency’s newly-expanded summer meals programs as SUN Programs: USDA’s Summer Nutrition Programs For Kids. The extensive toolkits available through the site include everything from YouTube videos to display stand rack cards. Alberto asked us to draw your attention to the toolkit’s Summer EBT Factsheet for Immigrant Serving Institutions. Most toolkit materials are available in English and Spanish, and many like the factsheet are available in Arabic, Chinese, Tagalog, and Vietnamese as well.

PIF partner Children at Risk is co-hosting its fifth annual Immigration Summit, which focuses on on children in immigrant families. PIF Director Adriana Cadena is presenting as part of a policy-focused panel that also includes the Children Thrive Action Network and the Center for Law and Social Policy.
