Prisons are the perfect incubator for spreading COVID-19.
Add your name to demand that Attorney General Barr immediately release people from federal prisons.
John,
The COVID-19 infection rate in prisons like Rikers Island are higher than any infection hotspot in the nation, and rates are climbing fast.
It’s up to us to fight to protect incarcerated folks around the country who are at much higher risk to contract the virus due to conditions outside of their control.
Real Justice is already working around the clock connecting our network of grassroots volunteers and organizers with district attorneys, sheriffs, and governors in all counties with high prison populations demanding that they immediately release folks. But we cannot forget about people in our federal prisons.
Prisons are the hotbeds of this crisis. People are forced into confined spaces where basic hygiene is difficult and access to personal protective equipment like masks are considered contraband.
Attorney General Barr is the only person with the power to protect hundreds of lives in federal prisons. If we don’t act quickly, increasingly more incarcerated folks will be put at risk.
I know we can do this! In just the last two weeks, the City of Ontario reduced their prison population by 24%. And Kentucky is reducing the sentences of over 1,000 people. If we speak up now, we can pressure Attorney General Barr to do the same on the federal level.
Appreciate all you do,
Shaun
