John —
For some kids, school lunches are all they will eat in a day. So, the end of the school year and the absence of school meals means that kids don't get the nutrition they need and that cash-strapped families are forced to make pennies stretch even further than before. Since the start of summer, some rural food pantries have already seen requests for help grow by 700% .
How do we help these families and kids get the food they need? Here in Iowa we could provide school lunches during the summer months and accept federal funds that would cover the majority of costs. A worthwhile expense, right?
Governor Reynolds doesn't think so.
This year the Governor made the reckless and inhumane decision to reject $29 million in federal funding that would have fed 240,000 Iowan children during their summer break.
Experts said her decision would have disastrous consequences for Iowans; But she thought it was more important to satiate far-right extremists instead.
Families are struggling with food insecurity because of this decision. Last week, the Des Moines Area Religious Council (DMARC) reported a single day record for people it served — over 2,000 people — at its food pantries. DMARC also noted that May was the busiest month for their food pantries in the organization's 50 year history. The numbers don't lie. The Governor's callous decision to put politics over people has had tangible effects on hard working Iowan.
This is exactly the kind of thing we've come to expect from the Republican leadership of our state — selling out Iowans for political gain.
Iowans deserve better.
We need to build a movement that will reject the GOP's political gamesmanship and instead support Iowans across our state. I'm working to build this movement, but I can't do it alone. In this upcoming election, we're facing a far-right conservative who will follow in Governor Reynolds' footsteps and put politics over people.
