Penn Hills, a suburb of Pittsburgh, was a haven for Black homebuyers in the 1950s and 1960s, offering middle-class residents an opportunity to live the suburban dream. In 2020, Black people accounted for 41% of the Penn Hills population, and descendants of the community’s Black pioneers — plus newcomers pushed into the suburbs by city gentrification — wonder whether Penn Hills can preserve the landmarks of its diversity ([link removed]) .
