John,

Growing up, my parents — my father, a veteran and career law enforcement officer, and my mother, a nurse — instilled in me a deep devotion to our country and an abiding commitment to service.

When I first ran for Congress in 2018 – flipping this seat blue for the first time in 50 years – I spoke often of a letter my parents wrote to my sisters and me. In it, they wrote out lessons for their daughters, one of which has been a driving message throughout my life:

“There is no greater vocation than service to your country.”

Throughout my career, I’ve been guided by this message as I’ve served this country, first, as a federal law enforcement officer working narcotics and money laundering cases. Then, I worked at the CIA as a case officer, where I worked undercover to combat terrorism and keep Americans safe.

In Congress, my commitment has always been clear: putting Virginians first. I've strived to address the needs of Virginians every day since I was elected, but I know there’s so much more we can do.

Now, during my campaign for Governor, I’ve heard from so many of you on the issues that matter most. Together, we can expand economic opportunity for everyone, strengthen our schools, keep our communities safe, and protect the fundamental rights of all Virginians.

“Have fun, but not at the expense of others”
And the one that their three sons-in-law hear the most, “you can always take your tie off”, which is meant both metaphorically and literally, and when taken literally, it also means that one must start with a tie on!
