Clarence Thomas finally acknowledged additional luxury travel he accepted from conservative billionaire Harlan Crow

As we’ve been saying for more than a year, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas needs to resign. And just as we said in our complaint, the Department of Justice needs to investigate whether he's violated the Ethics in Government Act by secretly accepting these free trips and gifts.

After amending a previous financial disclosure, Clarence Thomas has *finally* acknowledged additional luxury travel — trips to an Indonesian island and a secretive all-male club in the Northern California redwoods — that he accepted from conservative billionaire Harlan Crow.

The trips, taken in 2019, were previously revealed by ProPublica, but it is the first time that Thomas has included them on his financial disclosures.

John, Clarence Thomas has received over $4 million in gifts from his wealthy friends, all while he holds a lifetime position as one of the most powerful people in our country.

When a justice’s lifestyle is being subsidized by the rich and famous, it absolutely corrodes public trust and threatens the rule of law.

Most government employees, and even other federal judges, are scrupulous in reporting gifts, usually much smaller and often from personal friends, as required on personal financial disclosure forms.

John, Clarence Thomas has shown us the urgent need for a binding and enforceable ethics code for the Court.

We recently endorsed a proposal from Rep. Goldman that would create an investigative body within the Supreme Court that could look into ethics issues like Justice Alito's flags and Justice Thomas's secret trips, and report findings to Congress. Sounds like a good plan to us!

As CREW’s Virginia Canter recently told Courthouse News, “This is not going to end well for the court if it doesn't get its house in order or if Congress doesn't step up."

CREW is pushing for stronger ethics laws, and we need your support to do it. Help us continue our work to hold Clarence Thomas – and any leader who violates the law – accountable. Make a donation directly to CREW’s efforts today →
