Dear Friend, Thanks to your support, Carter’s has taken its first step towards ending toxic textiles! At the end of March, Carter’s released a Restricted Substances List (RSL), disclosed information about energy usage and waste reduction, committed to using more organic cotton, and provided greater transparency about efforts to protect human rights within its supply chain. But, this is not enough! An RSL limits what harmful chemicals can be present in the end consumer product but does not limit what chemicals can be used during manufacturing. This means that garment workers and our planet could still be exposed to harmful and persistent chemicals. Join us in calling on Carter’s to protect workers and our environment! While we appreciate this first step, workers and their communities cannot be left out of the equation. Over 8,000 chemicals are used in textile manufacturing. An estimated 20% of industrial water pollution is attributed to the textile manufacturing industry. Textile production uses an estimated 43 million tons of chemicals every year! During the current health crisis, it has become increasingly apparent that all of our health and the health of the planet are interconnected. Policies that do not address the harms to workers and the planet, are a partial solution at best. Let Carter’s know that baby steps are not enough – they must also prioritize the health and safety of garment workers! With your support, we have moved Carter’s, the largest retailer of baby clothes in the US, and together we can push Carter’s to respect workers’ right to health. Thank you for all that you do, |
