John — there is no U.S. Senator more personally responsible for the threats to in vitro fertilization and contraception than Josh Hawley.
FIRST: The Guardian exposed Josh Hawley’s role in the shutdowns of IVF clinics in Alabama earlier this year. Hawley’s legal arguments from leading the Hobby Lobby case — that contraception “may induce an abortion by preventing implantation of a fertilized egg” — served as the foundation for the Alabama ruling. Those same arguments continue to threaten access to IVF in other states with “personhood” laws like Missouri.
Hawley even cosponsored a federal version of that “personhood” law, putting IVF access at risk nationwide.
THEN: Just last week, Hawley voted against the Right to Contraception Act in the U.S. Senate. It was no big surprise, considering one of the highlights of Hawley’s career was working on the Hobby Lobby case aimed at letting employers decide whether to restrict access to birth control for their workers.
NOW: New reporting in Missouri confirmed that the future of IVF remains uncertain.
Hawley said his crusade to end reproductive freedom is “core to who I am” — and he’s spent six years in the U.S. Senate proving that to all of us.
He led the charge to overturn Roe v. Wade by appointing control-obsessed judges and writing amicus briefs from his taxpayer-funded U.S. Senate office. That paved the way for Missouri’s total abortion ban, enacted just minutes after Roe was overturned, which is regarded as one of the most extreme bans in the country.
In the weeks after Roe fell, Hawley even co-sponsored a national abortion ban in the U.S. Senate.
And right now, the Supreme Court is considering the case argued by Josh Hawley’s wife and originally ruled on by Josh Hawley’s campaign donor judge to ban the most commonly used abortion pill, mifepristone, in all 50 states. We’re expecting their decision any day now.
Hawley has spent his first term proving that he wants absolute control over how we build our families and live our lives. We can’t afford to give him another.
