Folks,
- The Washington Post, 4/16/24
The Washington Post is reporting that states with Republican legislatures are passing bills to ban books from school libraries – and threatening librarians with prison or fines if they don’t comply.
In Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis' 2022 law allowed any person – even those who were not a parent of a child in a school district – to challenge books and get them pulled from shelves. Democrats stood up then, telling Governor DeSantis' he would regret signing the law. And they were right.
In fact, last month, DeSantis backtracked on the law that he championed, signing legislation to limit the number of challenges from people without a child attending Florida schools. He now recognizes what Democrats told him all along – book bans do not work.
According to Axios, Virginia is one of the top states in the entire country for where book bans are in place. Democrats must stand up and call out bans for what they are – wrong and ineffective.
We have to do everything we can to elect Democrats up and down the ballot this year in Virginia and across the nation that will fight back against the GOP’s attacks on our freedoms and liberties. WIll you rush a $5 donation now?
Thank you,
Mark Warner
