Sea Shepherd Files Police Report Over
Whale Slaughter

The Grind is a brutal tradition in the Faroe Islands north of Scotland that herds pilot whales and dolphins into coves for slaughter on-shore. Despite claims that this hunt is driven by local dietary needs, Faroese public health officials advise against human consumption of the meat, revealing this as just a cruel tradition. Sea Shepherd crews documented an unusually cruel and careless
grind on June 11th<[link removed]> and we have now filed a police report singling out the local grind foreman to the Faroese police for animal cruelty. Our police report focuses on the local authority responsible for the brutal abuse of not only the 138 pilot whales that were killed, but also the 90 whales left in the shallow waters of the fjord for another 24 hours after the slaughter. Survey
Determination to protect the world’s most endangered marine mammal remains undaunted despite the results of the 2024 Vaquita Survey, which were released yesterday. Survey data shows between 6-8 Vaquita were seen during the 2024 survey which is a statistical decline from the
8-13 Vaquita seen in 2023.<[link removed]> One healthy yearling was seen. The visual and acoustic effort focused on waters in and around the Zero Tolerance Area (ZTA) which is regarded as a stronghold for the last few vaquitas. Half of the 9 sightings took place in the expansion area where our Operation Milagro grew this January to protect more area, which strongly suggests our campaign’s expansion is having an impact. Sea Shepherd CEO Pritam Singh said in the press conference that “For Sea Shepherd, our commitment to the Vaquita's survival is absolute. Along with the Mexican Government, we will re-double our efforts to protect this species, and in the coming weeks we will support CONANP as they deploy new technologies to help find Vaquita, bolstering our ability to defend the most endangered marine mammal on earth.”
