Dear John,
While coronavirus ravages the country, we in BIPOC communities (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) suffer in a unique way. Because of the entrenched racism, classism, and settler colonialism of the United States, our communities are disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Our people are dying at higher rates, are most affected by food shortages, and are at the frontlines of brutality from police departments who choose to “enforce” social distancing instead of offering aid.

The systemic challenges we have always faced are magnified during this crisis, which is why it is important to make the time and space in Sunrise to process this extraordinary grief. That’s why we’ve established a section of our beginner course—Green New Deal Crash Course & Coronavirus—that is led by and made especially for Black, Indigenous, and POC folk. Sign up for this section, which starts April 21. [[link removed]]

School often falls short in teaching us how to navigate life in a world that cordons us off as “other.” So often we are dependent solely on our families and communities to learn these valuable lessons. As young BIPOC individuals in this movement, we have a duty to come together and offer that kind of leadership to the friends and neighbors who need it, especially at a time like this. It isn’t enough to survive this crisis--we need to make sure our people are set up to thrive in the long term.

This Sunrise School section is designed and facilitated by BIPOC trainers to offer a space for any BIPOC person to process how our communities are faring and to develop the skills necessary to lead from our unique perspectives on this crisis. Though BIPOC are welcome to join any of the Sunrise School course sections, we do encourage participation in this BIPOC-specific course, as it will address problems and skill development unique to our communities.

Let’s do the work to build each other up and overwrite a system that sets us up for failure.

P.S. -- What is "BIPOC"? Why don’t we just say "POC"? The term BIPOC stands for "Black, Indigenous, People of Color." It is meant to unite all people of color in the work for liberation while intentionally acknowledging that not all people of color face the same levels of injustice. By specifically naming Black and Indigenous people, this term recognizes that Black and Indigenous people face the worst consequences of systemic white supremacy, classism, and settler colonialism.
