When I was growing up, my mom used to always tell me, “Joey, no one is better than you. Everyone is your equal, and everyone is equal to you.”
That was her code. It summed up the set of values that my parents both lived by and expected me and my sister Val and my brothers to live by. It is the same code that I have passed on to my children and that they have passed on to their children as well. For the Biden family, it all comes down to treating everyone with dignity and respect.
So now, as we move on to a general election I want to make sure this campaign communicates the values that guide how we do our work, so that everyone knows what we are about. Mayor Pete Buttigieg had a really wonderful set of “Rules of the Road” he and his supporters followed, and it’s one of the many things that made Team Pete so special.
When I would walk out of my Grandpa Finnegan’s house in Scranton, he would tell me, “Joey, keep the faith.” My grandmother would always yell back, “no, Joey, spread it. Spread the faith.” On our campaign, “keep the faith” has been more than just a saying, it’s a rule my team and I have lived by. Through low lows and high highs, our campaign staff and volunteers have kept the faith as we pursued this nomination. We’ve never given up.
But I’d like to put some more of these rules into writing, and I’d like your help to do it.
Will you share an idea of a campaign rule you think we should adopt? My team and I will be collecting them and rolling out the final ones next week:
These rules will encompass what this campaign has and always will be about.
We’re a campaign that values empathy and inclusion. We want every interaction we have with one another to contain kindness and joy. We want to maintain humility and gratitude throughout this process.
But I want us to expand on these ideas and to put these values into words we can live by -- especially now when everything is online and human interaction is limited.
How we engage with each other, and especially people who do not support this campaign yet, is as important as ever.
So let’s set a roadmap for how we engage with each other and others online. Let’s make these rules together, and let’s embody them in everything we do.
Have an idea for a rule? Submit it here, my team and I will be going through all of them, I promise! Click here so we can consider yours >>
Thanks for helping me build this campaign. We couldn’t do any of this without you.
Keep the faith, Joe
