Governor Stitt has signed two bills into law placing restrictions on getting a citizen’s initiative on the ballot — and Republicans are popping open the champagne.
Although they’re trying to deny it with straight faces, it’s clear GOP lawmakers, in cahoots with Stitt, are desperately trying to prevent a citizen initiative protecting abortion access from ever being placed on the ballot.
The two bills signed by Stitt are Senate Bill 518, which increases the amount of verification needed for each gathered signature, and House Bill 1105, which increases the amount of time people have to challenge the validity of a petition from 10 to 90 days.
No matter what the governor says or how right-wing Republican lawmakers try to frame it, John, this is a direct attack on a cornerstone of Oklahoma democracy.
Oklahoma Republicans are in full-blown panic mode, John. They know other Republican-controlled states have seen voters overwhelmingly pass ballot measures protecting abortion access.
Extremists controlling the Oklahoma GOP are frightened the same will happen here if a similar initiative is on our ballot.
We are Democratic strong, powered by grassroots efforts and activists of this Great State. Our mission is to fight for Oklahoma’s most vulnerable communities, protect working families and ensure that we live up to the promises of the Oklahoma dream.
