Albany update: Climate Superfund Act passes, but other key climate legislation fails to move forward
With a historic reminder of the value of fighting until the end, at 3:00 am on June 8, after a frustrating and disappointing 2024 Legislative session for climate activists, the New York Assembly joined the State Senate in passing the Climate Superfund Act. This is a landmark bill that holds the fossil fuel companies accountable for the damages of the climate crisis, and will raise $3 billion a year for New York State to strengthen infrastructure and lift some costs off taxpayers. The Senate also passed the NY Home Energy Affordability Act and the Just Energy Transition Act, both of which would have made significant steps toward fulfilling the mandates of the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act. However, the Assembly declined to move on either of those two key bills and so they died. In addition, the Packaging Reduction and Recycling Infrastructure Act, aimed at reducing plastic pollution, passed in the Senate but never came to a vote in the Assembly. Note that this was also a year in which little money was appropriated in the budget for climate-focused intervention. The state-wide climate movement, including the many members of 350Brooklyn, waged exhaustive campaigns on behalf of a just transition, and the State Senate was consistently responsive to our concerns. Ultimately, unfortunately, Governor Hochul and Assembly Speaker Heastie responded to other interests.

Defend Local Law 97- A virtual briefing
Wednesday, June 12, 7pm - 8pm
In 2023, NYC passed its "Green New Deal for Buildings," Local Law 97, which requires large buildings to cut their greenhouse gas emissions steadily over time. Unable to block the bill itself, big real estate interests have now introduced a bill that would carve out so many exceptions to LL97 as to weaken it considerably. Find out how we can turn this threat back. Register for a virtual briefing hosted by Food & Water Watch and other climate allies on Wednesday, June 12 from 7 to 8 pm.
Announcing a People's Plan for Public Renewables
Monday, June 17 at 12 pm at Gov. Hochul's office, 633 Third Avenue, Manhattan
New York State passed the Build Public Renewables Act (BPRA) last year. Join Public Power NY (PPNY), elected officials, labor leaders, environmental justice organizers, and ratepayer advocates on Monday, June 17 at 12 pm in announcing PPNY's demands for a BPRA Buildout!
