John, we’ve got a powerful opportunity to push President Biden to deliver on his promise to keep families together – many of whom are care workers and family caregivers – who deserve to live with the safety of being home and without the threat of separation.
Right now, an estimated 1.3 MILLION undocumented spouses who are married to U.S. citizens currently live under the threat of deportation just because of their immigration status.
The White House has the power to take action to ensure families remain together by granting work permits to undocumented spouses married to U.S. citizens through an executive order.
Insiders tell us President Biden needs to hear from his colleagues in Congress that the majority of caring people want him to use this power to keep families together – and that’s where we come in.
Living with the threat of being separated from their families is a nightmare scenario for undocumented spouses, many of whom are family caregivers and paid care workers who uphold the pillars of a care infrastructure – childcare, elder and disability care, and other domestic work – that sustains their own families and the families they care for across the nation.
Granting work permits to undocumented spouses married to U.S. citizens is an executive action that would not require congressional approval. It would tell people who have built their lives here for decades, and the millions of Americans who are their family members and loved ones, that we recognize their incredibly important role in our society.
Your Senators are essential for building support and pressure for President Biden to ensure he listens to the majority of caring people in the U.S., who demand fair immigration policy and action that keeps families together and allows individuals to continue contributing to the economy and society of the place they call home.
Together, we can ensure that our leaders implement real solutions that advance freedom, safety and wellbeing for all families, ensure the health of an economy that works for all, and represent the will of the majority of caring people across the United States of America.
Thanks for all you do,
The NDWA Team
Thank you for being a dedicated supporter of the National Domestic Workers Alliance!
We're working day and night to win respect, recognition, and labor rights and protections for the more than 2.5 million nannies, house cleaners, and homecare workers.
The majority of domestic workers sit at the center of some of our nation’s most decisive issues because of who they are and what they do: they are women – mostly women of color, immigrants, mothers, and low-wage workers. They are impacted by almost every policy affecting the future of our economy, democracy and country.
Domestic workers can lead us toward a new, inclusive vision for the future for all of us -- and your grassroots support is the fuel that can get us there.
