Promote the General Welfare

Don Blankenship released the following statement today on Promoting the General Welfare
America’s founders wrote in the Preamble of the Constitution:
“We the People of the United States in Order to form a more perfect union, [and] ...promote the general welfare....do ordain and establish this Constitution of the United States of America.”
At the time our founders wrote those words, they intended the word “welfare” to mean what it meant to them in the 18th century—“the health, happiness, and prosperity of Americans.” They did not intend the word welfare to mean what it means to most Americans today— “financial support for those in need.”
But our elected federal officials have failed for decades to promote the welfare of Americans. Instead, they have chosen corruption, waste, and a nonsensical trade policy to promote themselves and their personal welfare. The result has been that the welfare of Americans has been sacrificed.
Our government leaders’ failing to put the welfare of Americans first has never been more apparent than it is today. The coronavirus pandemic is destroying the American economy and our welfare. Our government officials are now unconstitutionally requiring that we sacrifice our happiness and our prosperity to mitigate the catastrophic impact of their misguided policies. Americans cannot even go to work, socialize, nor freely travel.
Still our government leaders refuse to take responsibility. They, with the help of the media, are instead attempting to divert our attention from their failures. They instead seek to focus our attention on China’s failure to tell us that the virus was spreading throughout Wuhan, China months before we were told of the virus. Our government is also blaming the World Health Organization (WHO) for failing to do its job. Both of these facts, while true, should not be our focus.
Our focus should be on the truth that our government officials knew about the risk of a coronavirus years before Covid-19 began to spread in Wuhan, China. We did not need to depend on, nor should we have expected, a communist dictatorship to tell us about the spread of a coronavirus. We should have known that China would not tell us about a spreading virus and that the WHO was not committed to promoting the welfare of Americans.
The further truth is that our government officials have known for decades that human consumption of certain wild animals transfers viruses such as Covid-19 from those wild animals to humans. Viruses such as HIV (1983-monkeys), Nipah (1999-bats), SARS (2003-civet cats), and Ebola (2014-bats), gave us clear and ample warning.
It was our government policies that led to our reliance on Chinese products, including our medicines. It was these same policies that entangled us in and exposed us to the dangers of Chinese practices. Among those practices is the slaughtering of these same virus carrying wild animals at food markets, so called wet markets, and selling them for human consumption.
Now our health and even our lives have been put at risk by the failure of our government to promote our welfare. Instead, the welfare of Americans was exposed to the unhealthy conditions and practices of a foreign communist dictatorship—a dictatorship wherein it is a legal and a well-known practice to eat wild animals that carry and transmit coronaviruses.
As Americans we cannot expect to change the misbehavior of our current government officials. But we the people regularly have the opportunity to change the behavior of our government. A government that got us in this coronavirus mess. We can re-enact the Constitution and promote our own welfare. This fall we can vote for our welfare and the other guarantees of the Constitution.
Otherwise we can stay home for a few weeks, stand six feet apart forever, and wash our hands until they are worn out. But so long as thousands of American businessmen and women travel in and out of countries where bats, chimps, monkeys, and wild cats, are regular dinner foods, we will continue to have coronavirus pandemics. We will also continue to export our way of life and our welfare to Asia.
The Constitution Party is the only party that will “Make America Great Again” because it is the only party dedicated to complying with the Constitution that made America great to begin with.
