Last week, Republicans blocked a bill in the Senate that would protect the right to access contraception.

Here’s what happened: Senate Democrats put forward a bill called the Right to Contraception Act, which would stop the federal government and states from passing laws limiting access to birth control. Then, after insisting they didn’t want to take away the right to birth control, all but two Republicans voted against the bill.

This is how limiting fundamental rights begins. We have to hold Republicans accountable for their extremism – and we have to stop them now.

We know you know this, but it bears repeating: contraception is health care, and access to birth control is a critical, fundamental right.

Republicans are trying to limit our rights and take away our freedoms. This is how it starts: they shift the national narrative, they block measures that would protect access, they put forward candidates (like Trump) who support their extremist views, and they hope people don’t hold them accountable when it comes time to vote.

This is how it happened with abortion – and now they’re waging an attack on birth control.

We have to hold them accountable. It’s an election year. We have to vote for candidates who are full-throated in their support of these rights – and we must talk to our friends and family about these Republican attacks on birth control.
